Cannabis in New York: WATCH: The history and the future
Understanding the Marijuana Regulation
and Taxation Act: The Path to Legalization and Where We Go from Here
New York State, as of March 31, 2021, has joined a growing coalition of states across the country that have “legalized marijuana.” What does this mean moving forward?
The MBA welcomed Sean McGowan, a partner at Kaufman McGowan PLLC, “Corporate and Securities Counsel to the State-Legal Cannabis Industry,” to discuss all things cannabis in NYS. Kaufman McGowan is based in Hauppauge, and is one of the leading corporate cannabis law firms in the U.S., representing several of the world’s largest cannabis investors and operating businesses.
This discussion focused on 3 aspects of the cannabis industry:
- An overview of the history of cannabis and how we got here today;
- A high level summary of the state of the legal cannabis industry on a national level; and
- A review of the “Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act” which was signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo on March 31, 2021, including the new opportunities it will create for businesses and individuals in the State of New York.
